Warblers Wing Their Way Back South

What goes up must come down. It is only logical that birds that migrate north in the spring, must make the equally perilous journey back South in the autumn. Why then does the spring migration bring about fevered birding marathons, while the autumn migration remains largely ‘unsung’ in the birding community? More warblers actually pass through Ohio in fall than in spring, yet they go by mostly unnoticed. Again, how can this be? Much of the answer lies in the fact that fall warblers are inconspicuous. The fever of the breeding season passed, males are largely silent and their breeding plumage has dulled. Add into the mix young birds, and fall warblers can be notoriously hard to identity! Nonetheless we can still enjoy these birds are they pass through our neighborhoods and wish them a little luck on the hard journey ahead. They will need it.

Great Post! I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for the warblers passing through.
