Overwintering Butterflies

Where do butterflies go in the winter? Each species of butterfly spends the winter in its own way. The Monarchs travel to Mexico to spend the winter. A few others, Red Admirals and Painted Lady will go to Texas or Florida. Mouring Cloak, Eastern Comma, Question Mark will spend the winter in the area as an adult. They will find a pile of sticks or wood to spend the winter. Many other species will spend the winter in a chrysalis these would be swallowtails, some skippers, Azures. Finally some butterflies will overwinter as caterpillars in the early instars. This would include Red Spotted Purple, Fritillary, Eastern Tail Blue and Pearl Crescent
