Fall is a Comin!

Written by: Christina Funk

Sitting at the Window on Wildlife this morning at the Germantown MetroPark Nature Center, it became apparent that Fall is knocking on the door. Yes, the leaves have begun to change and the temperatures have started falling; however, it was a visitor to the Window that caught my attention. Among the American Goldfinches, Tufted Titmice, and Carolina Chickadees that were all buzzing around was a little Yellow-rumped Warbler! He did not stay long, but just long enough to get a good look at his Fall plumage. Some Yellow-rumped Warblers are winter residents while others are migratory visitors. The migratory visitors, like the one that visited us today, migrate through during the months of September and October. Another migratory visitor recently spotted at our Window was a Black-throated Green Warbler. Both are signs that Fall migration has surely begun, and it is an exciting time of year as different species of birds make their way through. The Animal Habitat and Migration festival coming up this weekend on Saturday, September 12, from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM at Germantown MetroPark is a great way to celebrate animal migration and work together to protect their habitats. You can also spend a relaxing morning watching migratory visitors at the Window on Wildlife as I did this morning. Be sure to keep your eyes out for these exciting Fall visitors!
