Gold a Sure Sign of Spring

The weather has finally broken and Spring is well on its way. If you are like me, while you are not at all sad to see the end of foul weather, the departure of some of our favorite feeder birds comes with some trepidation. Without bitter temperatures and thick snow cover even our commonest birds are no longer in need of our company. Around here a few white-throated sparrows and dark-eyed juncos, lingering winter visitors, can still be seen poking around the feeders. Meanwhile a familiar summer bird has seemingly reappeared. Although American goldfinches are year-round Ohio residents, in fall the male’s brilliant plumage is replaced by a drab yellow-brown coat. Look out your window today though, and you may notice the bold ebullient bird of summer is making a comeback. The re-yellowing of the goldfinches may not be the most obvious sign of spring, but it is as sure a sign as any
