Eagles Make Dayton Home

By now you have all likely heard the wonderful news about the bald eagles in Dayton. A number of recent sightings culminated this past February in the discovery of a nest in the Dayton well fields across the street from Eastwood MetroPark. The nest, constructed on top of a former red-tailed hawk’s nest, while in a secluded area, is visible from the entrance to Eastwood lake. Patient park visitors have already been awarded with sights of the mated pair, as well as two juveniles, last year’s offspring. Did you know bald eagle’s will reuse the same nest (called an aerie) year after year, continuing to add new nesting material with each new season? This has resulted in some phenomenally large nests, some more than 10 feet wide. With any luck we will be enjoying eagles in the Dayton area for years to come!
