On Their Way Back
The monarchs are on the move. Reports are in, the monarch have started their journey back to the United State and Canada. The temperatures are rising and the colonies are breaking up, monarchs are filling the skies. In Texas the milkweed is starting to sprout and will be providing a place for females to lay eggs. How long until we see monarch in Ohio? For us it will be a couple more months. How fast the butterflies move back into our area will depend on the weather. Our temperatures will need to be in the 70’s constantly and of course there will need to be milkweed and other nectar plant for the monarch to feed on. With spring coming we should start to see many more butterflies in the area. In past posting I have described several of the really season butterflies you can start to look for over the next few weeks look for more posting on the butterflies you should be seeing in the area. The picture below was taken by Mr. Don Davis. It is a great shot of the monarchs in flight as they move out of the sanctuary areas.

I don’t know much about butterflies, but today 3/16/09 we saw a black butterfly( I don’t think it was a moth)with yellow along the edges. Near Doylestown in Wayne County. What type of butterfly would it be? Is this to early for them, the temp was around 58 degrees.

It sounds to me like you spotted a mourning cloak. They over winter in tree cervices and other sheltered spots and can sometimes be spotted on warm sunny winter days.
