Mourning Cloak

This is one of the butterflies that spend the winter in Ohio. It finds a pile of leaves or woods or even bark of a tree to shelter itself from the cold of winter. On a warm day in the later winter or early spring you may catch a glimpse of this butterfly if you are out walking in the woods. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of birch, willow, aspen, elm or hackberry. The adults can be seen from Mid-March to mid-October.
