The First of Spring

Even though it is still winter it’s hard not to let your mind wonder with thoughts of spring. One of the first butterflies we should see in the spring is the Spring Azure. (Clelastrina landon). This little butterfly is a Gossamer wing. It has a tiny wing span of .75-1.25 “, and as the name implies it is blue in color. The under side of the wing is more gray but in flight or when the butterfly is basking you will be able to see the medium blue color. The Spring Azure can be found through out Ohio in the deciduous woodlands, forest edge, field and gardens. The host for the caterpillar is various trees such as black cherry, flowering dogwood, gray dogwood and shrubs in the viburnum family as well as blueberries. This little butterfly is abundant in March and April.
