Tiny Little Butterfly

Swamp Metalmark Calephelis muticum

The Swamp Metalmark has not been seen in Ohio since 1988. It is restricted to areas that are wetlands and alkaline. This would include fens, swamp and bogs. The adult has rusty orange markings with metallic gray bands. The size of this little butterfly’s wings is .9-1.2” .It has only one brood per season. The eggs of the adult female are laid on swamp thistle and the little caterpillars will over winter at the base of the plant.
