Overwintering Monarchs
The Monarchs have been in their overwintering site in Mexico. The December counts have been taken and it looks like the news is good for the butterflies. The early predictions were not encouraging for the butterflies. Spring of 2008 was cold and wet and many storms in the south slowed the progress of the Monarchs, the fall migration sightings seem to confirm the low numbers. Last years count showed 4.61 hectares of butterflies and this year there appears to be 5.06 hectares of butterflies. This is good news for the butterflies! The migration north will be starting in a few weeks and we’ll be excited to see how the butterflies progress this year. The picture below was taken by Dr. Lincoln Brower, a scientist that studies the Monarchs. The picture shows the colonies of butterflies in the trees. The orange color of the trees is the butterflies.
