Endangered Butterflies In Ohio

Purplish Copper Lycaena helloides

This little butterfly is one of the seven butterflies on the Ohio DNR list of endangered species. Once a common butterfly in Ohio it is now rare and found in very localized areas. Its wing span is 1” to 1.2 “, the forewing is orange with black spots and a purplish apex and outer margins. Hindwings are purplish brown with small black spots. It is in the Gossamer Wings (Lycaenidae)/Coppers (Lycaeninae) family.

The habitat for the purplish copper is wet meadows, stream margins roadside ditches, pond margins and marshes. The larval host plant is knotweed and dock. Through the work of the Toledo Zoo this butterfly is being breed and reintroduced in the Ohio area.
