If moths have no Mouths Why Do They Do they Eat My Clothes?

Many adult moths do not have mouth parts so as an adult they would not feed. So with no mouth parts how can a moth eat your clothes? It is the larva stage that causes the damage to clothing. The clothes moth is small only 1/4”-1/2” long. It does not like the light so the moth finds a dark place to hid. Closet, attic, and basements. The adults lay eggs on the fabric and it is the larva that causes the damage. The closet moth likes woolens, hair, fur, silk, felt and feathers. They are more attracted to clothing that has perspiration or body oils in the clothing.

Helpful tips for keeping your clothes free of damage: Be sure clothing is clean when it is packed away for the season. Air out and clean clothes on a regular bases. Be sure to get back in the corners. Clothing can be packed away in air tight storage container with moths balls. Be sure to follow package directions with the moth balls.
