What is peak time for butterflies?

Peak time for butterflies is a multi layered question. Each species of butterfly has a peak. There are early summer butterflies, mid-summer butterflies and late season butterflies. There will be butterfly peaks all through out the summer. As these different peaks overlap larger numbers of butterflies will be seen.

This time of the summer look for monarchs, black swallowtails, pipevine swallowtails and spicebush swallowtails. There are others but these will be the most common to the backyard.

What also plays a part in the numbers of butterflies seen, is the number of broods the butterflies have in a season. Some species will have only one brood. To see these butterflies it is important to know when that brood will hatch. Other butterflies will have multiply broods over the summer that increases the opportunities to see those particular butterflies.
