Bengals making the grade in rounds 3-4
Yesterday I gave you my grades for the Bengals first two draft picks of A.J. Green and Andy Dalton. They received an A and B respectively. Today we’ll look at the teams’ third and fourth round picks.
Round three: The Bengals selection of Nevada outside linebacker Dontay Moch was a bit of a surprise. The little-known linebacker made a name for himself by blowing NFL scouts away with his performance at the Combine. At 6-2, 248-pounds, Moch ran a 4.44 in the 40-yard dash and posted a 42-inch vertical leap.
The Bengals were searching for a speedy weakside linebacker that can rush the passer and found that in Moch. His freakish talent will allow him to play a role much like Brandon Johnson in Mike Zimmer’s aggressive and speedy defense. This acquisition may finally put an end to the experimentation with Michael Johnson at OLB. Johnson is best suited as a pass rushing defensive end and should be developed as such.
One has to love the player’s athletic ability, toughness, aggression and upside. But the selection does come with some reservations. Moch appears to have stiff hips, lacks experience in coverage, level of competition played and marginal upper body strength.
The Bengals can only hope that Moch isn’t just a workout warrior and can coach him up to his full potential. He’s an intriguing prospect nonetheless.
Grade: C+
Round four: Georgia offensive guard Clint Boling could turn out to be a fourth round steal for the Bengals. There are a lot of similarities between him and former Bengals OG Eric Steinbach. Boling is very versatile with the ability to play any position along the offensive line. He’s agile with quick feet and good overall technique. Boling played in a pro-style offense at Georgia and did a nice job run blocking, but pass protection is clearly his best attribute. He’s a perfect fit for what the Bengals O-line will try to accomplish this season.
Grade: B

Sure speed kills but also big strong running attacks have also killed “the arm tackling dont wrap them up kings of the NFL” Cincinnati Bengals. Sometimes the mental toughness and physical strength just doesnt translate. Is this the Head Coach ? Is it the Strength Coach ? Is it what is allowed in the lockeroom ? Somebody needs to kick some tail in there !!!
