Bengals lose defensive tackle to injury
One of Cincinnati’s best run-stoppers will no longer be in the defensive line rotation for the Bengals.
Fourth-year defensive tackle Pat Sims injured his ankle against Cleveland on Nov. 27 and was put on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season. Sims played in this season’s first 11 games, logging 28 tackles with a sack.
Cincinnati added depth by signing free agent DT Nick Hayden to the roster. Hayden (6-4, 292; Wisconsin) is classified a third-year NFL player. He was a sixth-round selection by Carolina in the 2008 draft. He spent most of his rookie year on the practice squad, played in 10 games with two stars in 2009 and played in 14 games with 10 starts last season. He opened 2011 training camp with Carolina and was waived on Sept. 3. His NFL totals include 26 games, 13 starts, 85 tackles and 2.0 sacks.
The Bengals also signed DT Swanson Miller to the practice squad. Miller (6-4, 310; Oklahoma State) is classified a first-year NFL player. He entered the league in April of 2010 as a college free agent with Cleveland and was waived at the conclusion of preseason. He was signed to the New Orleans practice squad in December of 2010, was signed the New Orleans offseason roster for 2011 and opened ’11 training camp with the Saints. He was waived on Sept. 4. He has spent time this regular season on both the New Orleans and Tampa Bay practice squads.
Cincinnati released rookie DT Cornell Banks of Fresno State from the practice squad. Banks had been signed to the practice squad on Nov. 29.
