Bengals coaches picked to lead North squad in Senior Bowl
The Bengals coaching staff has been picked as the coaching staff for the North squad in the 2011 Under Armour Senior Bowl. The game will be played at 4 p.m. (EST) on Sat., Jan. 29 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., with television coverage on NFL Network.
The assignment is the third at a Senior Bowl for a Bengals staff led by head coach Marvin Lewis. Following the 2003 season, Lewis’ first as Bengals head coach, the Bengals coached the ’04 North squad in a 28-10 loss to the South, led by Marty Schottenheimer and the San Diego Chargers’ coaching staff. After the 2008 season, the Bengals coached the ’09 North squad in a 35-18 loss to the South, led by Jack Del Rio and his Jacksonville Jaguars staff. This year, the South squad will be coached by Chan Gailey and his Buffalo Bills coaching staff.
“I have always felt that if we’re not going to be coaching in the NFL playoffs, we should go to work and get to know some of the new prospects as well as we can,” Lewis said. “Coaching the Senior Bowl has been extremely helpful the two times we’ve had an opportunity to do it, and I’ve had a couple other opportunities to do it on other staffs. I think it’s always a plus. It gives you a good insight into the players — to their temperaments, how they learn, what kind of guys they are and how they compete.
“So we’re excited to once again have this opportunity. This game always has the best players from around the country. We will get a lot out of working directly with them in practice and in the game.”
Lewis also coached in the 1998 Senior Bowl, as defensive coordinator on the Baltimore Ravens staff that directed a 31-8 victory for the South.
No Bengals staff had coached in the Senior Bowl prior to 2004.
This year’s game is the 62nd Senior Bowl. The game originated in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1950, but has been played annually in Mobile since 1951. The South leads the series, 29-26-3. Three games (1991-93) were played with an AFC vs. NFC format, rather than North vs. South.
Senior Bowl practices are attended by general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts and other front office personnel from all 32 NFL teams. The Bengals’ contingent, including the athletic training, video and equipment staffs, will depart for Mobile on Sunday, Jan. 23.
The Senior Bowl is a non-profit, charitable event which has donated more than $4.5 million to charity since 1989.

All the other coaches are acting like coaches and more worried about THEIR team and jobs. Well, atleast Ocho-Stinko, T.O. and Palmer are’nt playing. It may look good on the coaching staff’s PEE-WEE football resume’.

So, the 2 times that they coached the Senior Bowl, they won the division the following season. Sounds like a plan to me, let’s hope the trend continues.

Why do the Bengals want to coach the Senior Bowl? Because they get to use their coaches instead of those pesky scouts that Mike doesn’t seem to want to hire. It’s soooo hard to keep being a Bengals fan!

I saw where Lewis’ Bengals are 10th (out of 27) in the league in drafting players that stay in the league over his tenure. Beautiful. Still would like him as a GM rather than coach. While he’s a good coach and the best thing Ohio’s seen in 20 years, he’s still outcoached by smarter coaches like Fisher and Belichick. He still can’t stop penalties and poor clock management.
