Cheap shot by Browns’ Ward deserved bigger hit from NFL

So Browns rookie safety T.J. Ward was fined $15,000 for what was - in my opinion - a cheap shot on Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley Sunday.

Whoopee.

Forgive me for not applauding the NFL on this one.

Let’s consider that Shipley was left with a concussion, will likely miss at least one game and may suffer other lingering effects from the hit.

Meanwhile Ward, who received a $2 million signing bonus, pulls $15,000 out of his couch cushions and takes aim at another defenseless receiver this week.

Also this week, the NFL fined Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil $40,000 for an obscene gesture toward game officials.

So the message here is that giving an official the “finger” is somehow nearly three times as bad as an illegal hit like Ward’s?

If the NFL is really serious about curtailing these types of hits, it should have sent a message and made an example of Ward.

Millionaire players only understand one thing — money. A six-figure fine and suspension is the only way to make Ward and others think twice about delivering illegal hits that could be career-ending.

You’re an idiot. the fine was twice the normal. Cecil has a previous record of such behavior. Ward didn’t know when he threw the ball was out. He was a little late & high, it happens. Not like he took 2 steps & then got hit.

Hey Ken, N’damukong Suh only got 7500$ fine for the big hit on Delhomme. So I think we were over fined myself. And his hit was after the whistle.

The ball was on the ground and he had already been hit by the other defender to jar the ball loose. It was a late and cheap hit. If the NFL is serious about watching out for players and concussions, like it was said here, the only thing that they understand is the money. It might be different if he didn’t leed with his helmet, but he did. Not good for football.

i completely agree with you, ken. it was a cheap, dirty hit and everyone knows it

I’m with you Ken. The money is inconsequential to these pro athletes. You have to “hit” (no pun intended) them and their team where it hurts: game suspension. Let’s not wait until another person gets maimed.

Wake up Buck. the ball wasn’t even close to the ground. Didn’t lead with his head either. Hit with his shoulder. It shows in the still frame pics. Might have been a little late but not cheap or dirty. Ever play the game & try to time a hit like that? Suppose you think Kimo’s hit was dirty too. The guy was just trying to make a play.

I agree it was a late hit, but buckfan3 the ball was not on the ground and he did not lead with his helmet. Did you even see the play? Go to cleveland.com/browns and see the picture.

Perhaps the NFL should institute an “attempt to wrap” rule if they are really serious about protecting players. Works in rugby and there are still many vicious, entertaining hits.

Ward didn’t lead with his head. Anyone watching the game could see that. It was an ugly hit but it is football.

Just because Carson Palmer cries about it, doesn’t make it a cheap shot. This is football, and they already coddle to the offense enough. Shipley had the ball in his hands and was knocked loose on the first hit, and the ball was knocked to the side of Shipley, the side that Ward could not see, and Ward put the hit on, before the ball was even on the ground. Watch the replay. I don’t recall seeing the Bengals fined for the “cheap shot” on Watson, however there was a penalty flag thrown for the very same offense. Hitting a defenseless receiver…Where is your outrage over that?

Ward lead with his shoulder and was off his feet before the ball even left Shipleys hands. Was Wars supposed to stop himself in mid air? Shipley also lowered his head after the ball hit him in the hands thus exposing his head to the hit. If he had not lowered his head he would have been hit in the chest.

I am a Browns fan, I was disgusted at TJ Ward’s action on Shipley. I have been involved in Semi-Pro football for 6+ years. There was no cause for him to do that. If the league suspended him for the season, I would not object. No player should try to end another’s career.

i was actually at the game… and while it was a late hit, it was also a heat-of-the moment hit. the defender was in full motion before the ball dropped-laws of physics state an object in motion will ALWAYS remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force! gravity was the only force working on ward…. but it can only work as fast as its nature…..

Actually Post, you need to watch the replay again. The ball wasn’t on the ground because it had already BOUNCED. Yep, it bounced and was in the air again when the hit was delivered. So either Ward is the fastest individual in history or it was a late hit.

Some of you need to watch the replay. The ball bounced off the turf before Ward hit Shipley. There is no debate about it, and it’s not even close. Clear cheap shot, dirty play

Shipley will think twice before he goes across the middle again! As Chris Speilman said, he (Ward) should get an award for that hit.

I wouldn’t dare crazies to take some action. The Bengals players could target Ward (who knows, they might be out of playoffs by then), or some out-of-work Bengal fan could decide to affect the playoff watch on his way out. I wouldn’t get snug. Some desperate people out there.

When are they going to start wearing dresses? This is not a big deal. I remember Bengals like David Fulcher cheap-shotting a lot of players and no one cried about it down here. What about Bill Bergey and his constant late and hard hits? If it is football, then let them play it and quit crying.

Just another typical cheap shot by a team that may win a game here and there but will ALWAYS be LOSERS. Just like their fans, LOSERS. Maybe someday they’ll be able to afford insigna on the helmets - it should be a capital “L”.

When a player lowers his shoulder then hits in an upward motion, there is intent to hurt. It was a cheap-shot, plain and simple. A fine is insignificant, what the league needs to do is impose suspensions without pay. 1 game for the first offense and multiple games for recurring offenses. This is a joke, when the league states that they are concerned about players’ safety and allow these hits to happen.

One of the worst premeditated shots to the head I’ve seen in my life in the NFL. Not to the shoulder, but the head. He had it lined up for about six steps. Cheap. The fine doesn’t go far enough.
