Memo to Bengals fans: Quit bashing Palmer

What’s wrong with Carson Palmer?

I’ve heard whispers that his arm isn’t as strong as it used to be and that the ball doesn’t have the zip that it once did.

Arm-chair quarterbacks, radio hosts and callers speculate that his elbow never fully healed from the injury in 2008. Or they say maybe his injured knee - courtesy of the evil Kimo von Oelhoffen in 2006 - is somehow causing lingering mental and physical problems.

Dave Lapham, color analyst for the Bengals on radio, disputes these claims. He’s seen Palmer working out and playing as much as anyone since he came into the league in 2003.

And let’s remember, he’s been watching in person from the sidelines, not from his couch.

While discussing the team’s issues on 700-WLW recently, Lapham said flat-out that Palmer’s velocity is as good as it has ever been.

He said Palmer needs to make better decisions - which I agree with - but blamed much of the offense’s problems on a line that can’t pass-protect and receivers who are running bad routes and not reading defenses correctly.

Regardless of whether there is an issue with Palmer or not, it’s time to quit complaining about him because the Bengals have no other options.

As far as the QB position goes, our only hope as fans for this season is that he improves.

Even Palmer with an average arm is better than the alternatives - a QB off the street, Jordan Palmer or recently acquired rookie third-stringer Dan LeFevour.

The Bengals can address the QB issue - if there is one - in the offseason.

The focus on THIS season, should be improving the play of the offensive line and receivers.

And let’s not forget everyone’s favorite tackling dummy, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski. I’ve defended ‘Brat’ in the past, but even my patience is wearing thin. If we’re going to bash someone, Bratkowski is the one who should be taking the heat.

Sorry, you have no right to tell the fans to stop bashing a QB who is supposed to elite and has sunk to mediocrity…this defense is going to carry this team through the next 2 games, and hopefully Palmer gets straightened out and performs the way he is supposed to. His performances are not good enough to beat good teams.

I don’t care if it his arm or not. Please stop telling us ALL of the wide receivers run bad routes. They have always said this about Chad (who has always received throws from Palmer). For all of his problems, who has ever said TO doesn’t run correct routes. Who’s fault is it we do not throw one ball, even if it is out of bounds, a game deep? I don’t care for Brat but there are long routes being ran and it’s Carson’s decision to pick a route to throw. Either Brat or Carson has to go. I’ve always said this and felt it was Brat. Unfortunately, maybe it is not.

I agree the line can’t pass protect at all; but I don’t think the problem is the WR’s- don’t think two seasoned vets are running routes that are as far off as the passes thrown in last week’s game.

Brian, of course you have the right to bash whoever you want. However, that isn’t the point of this article. His point is that the things people are bashing Palmer for are wrong, that most of the struggles are the wide receivers and lines fault not Palmer’s. I tend to trust Lapham’s opinion, since he is at practice often and has played in the NFL, over most average fans.

I agree with Brian. Who are you to tell us fans who to bash and not to bash. We aren’t stupid…….bench his a*s once and get his attention. We do need to address in the April draft.

I’ll quit bashing when he plays up to the standards of the NFL. It is agreed that some receivers miss routes miscue defense etc, etc, but Palmer is at the helm and needs to be the leader. If that means butt chewing on certain players then so be it. In last weeks game against the Raven I just thank God that Ed Reed wasn’t playing because he would have made us pay for such stupid passes. There were 2 picks with the possibility of 5 more. He was throwing were no one but the defense was. I watched Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers Monday night and they had poor o-lines and still got rid of the ball, this is what Palmer has to do. That or retire and give us a chance. Also the 0-Co-ordinator Poopkowski has to go too, we are WAAAAAYYY too predictable

I have said from the beginning that the weakest link of this offense is Bob Bratkowski! It’s ashame to have as much talent as the Bengals have on the offensive side of the ball and they SUCK!

You bengal fans just need to realize your receiving core (except for a couple) is a circus. Those guys could care less about what they do on the football field and you don’t have a strong enough coaching staff to get them to work. It all trickles down from the main problem in Mike Brown.

I will agree with Paxson on one thing: The offense line is not up to championship standards and defenders get in on Carson much too easily. That said, my observation is that when Palmer tried to throw long, going back to last season, it looked like he had trouble getting it there. And his accuracy on shorter passes is lacking. As for Lapham’s comments: Note that he covers Bengals games on a radio station. He is not free to say anything that could anger the Brown family, as the contract to cover the games can easily be switched to a more “accomodating” station.

WRs running bad routes? Whatever. You and that has been QB can go lay an egg. You can’t put it ALL on the WRs or O-line. He’s had time and he has over thrown, under thrown and, like another person said, he doesn’t go deep anymore. He and Chad have chemistry. They have played together the longest and Ocho knows the offense.

All you need is last games commentators telling you it was the first time a Bengal RB had a rushing and receiving TD in the same game since Corey Dillon to tell you what’s wrong with this team. PLAY CALLING pure and simple.

Forgive my comments. I like the way the Oline looks when they’re bent over. I wish the WR’s would put it all on me.

I’ll stop bashing Palmer when he starts being a real NFL quarterback like P. Manning, Brees, Rogers, etc. The DDN needs to stop backing him. He isn’t very good!

By hope for better

The point is, So what if it is palmers fault. He’s the best we have. Bashing him settles nothing.Rich wants to bench him, He must not be a bengal fan because why would a fan that wants the bengals to win say that? Or maybe he doesn’t care if they win.

We have some new guys on the line, yes, and a newer center who’s still gettin there. But it doesn’t take a genius to see Carson’s missing his throws. T.O. and Chad are gettin seperation, but the only throw Carson seems to make consistently is the short over-the -middle throws to Shipley and Gresham. The longer routes he’s missing. Sorry, but I’ve come to expect Carson to hit those routes. So that’s a problem.

By We just want improvement

September 29, 2010 2:08 PM | Link to this

I’m not saying Palmer needs to go or that we have better options, but Palmer is definitely not up to par with his peers on other teams. His passing rating was barely better than the first-game rookie! If the receivers are running the wrong routes, that is one thing, but it certainly did not look like that was the problem on Sunday when Palmer kept throwing the ball over their heads. And, if that is the problem, it is Palmer’s job to work with them and improve during the week. We are seeing no improvement week to week. It only seems to be getting worse.

What is Palmer, like the 5th highest paid QB in the league? What a joke

By TERRRIBLE

September 29, 2010 2:48 PM | Link to this

What a bad piece of writing this is. Palmer sucks right now. Lapam can watch the game from wherever he wants to, but the point is Palmer cant throw far, nor with any velocity! Which in the pros equals bad QB! Peyton Manning can walk out there with nobodys as receivers or OL, and still get first downs. Palmer cannot, and thats why this team cant beat the good teams. Plain and simple

By vonrob

Excellent comment by Ralph, take a look at the players we have on are o-line, four of the five would be lucky to be second string on any other team, and we are stuck with a very poor o-coordinator who should have been given the pink slip a long time ago.

Currently Palmer has a 71.3 QB rating and is ranked 22nd out of 30. Clearly reason to bash away. When he performs up to expectations people will stop bashing. It’s just that simple. I don’t need Dave Lapham to tell me if he stinks or not.

Palmer will come around. He got banged up again in preseason so had some delay in him getting ready for the season. As for the WR, I cant speak for T.O. or Shipley or anyone but Chad, but Chad runs a pretty good route and is the quickest out of his break of anyone in the league.

By excuses

September 29, 2010 5:12 PM | Link to this

I’m tired of hearing excuse after excuse for Palmer. It’s always somebody elses fault, the line is bad, Chad ran the wrong route…, I think its time to realize that he’s just not as good as we thought.

Just maybe they’re trying to save Carson because he doesn’t have a lot of passes left in his arm.He has had a lot of injuries and they have no backup QB. That’s a slippery slope if I’ve ever seen one.

By THEY ARE RIGHT AFTER ALL

September 29, 2010 8:26 PM | Link to this

As a life long Bengals fan I too agree with “Excuses” comments (above). All this Elite status for Carson is really just a smoke screen. It’s time to come to terms that he really does suck! I guess all those Squealer fans were right after all! Carson Palmer SUCKS and it’s time to find his replacement.

He’s a USC punk that can’t move in the pocket and Mike Brown signs little brother who is worse.Bengals playoff hopes hang by a thread with their QB situation. A Super Bowl won’t happen with Carson.

Wow, the Carson and Bengal bashers still show up to tear at their own team that just won two in row. Two division titles in 5 years and people are ready to throw it all under the bus. Even the Steelers ex-coach says watch out for the Bengals because winning ugly is still winning.

It is mostly the play of the offensive line that is the problem. After that, I list Palmer’s decision making ability, Brat’s offensive system and the receivers as other, smaller, factors in the problems. However, the team is 2-1 and could be 4-1 heading into its bye week. Not too bad, really.

By RudyFlyer

September 30, 2010 8:37 AM | Link to this

Palmer in particular and the offense in general should start playing better. Then the “bashers” go away. Palmer seems like a good guy whose opinion of his worth as a QB doesn’t watch the results on the field.

By Not Emotional

September 30, 2010 9:07 AM | Link to this

people need to quit looking at this emotionally. Palmer’s arm is fine. Palmer’s mind needs a little work. BUT I dont think that is becuase Palmer no longer gets it. I think they have him doing too much. look at how many checks they are doing at the line. Brat needs to simplify (look at the Defense in week 1) They are playing slow and thinking too much. look at this offense when they go hurry up and no one is thinking and running “Check with me”

Palmer has a mediocre O-line. His season rating is 71.3 (#22 of 33). Tony Romo has an O-line that is no better. His rating is 93.9. Matt Schaub and Michael Vick have been sacked 11 times each vs. Palmer’s 3, yet each has a rating at least 23 points higher. The team will not succeed with a bottom-third quarterback. Palmer is toast.

I’ve been trying to figure Carson out from my Lazyboy and 46 inch screen. I’m not a veteran analyst but He looks healthy. He’s just unsettled and I think that has everything to do with the “Twitter Twins” They’ve got him psyched out. You can see it in his eyes, he’s doubting himself. The sad thing is, they have three talented young receivers with more class than those two twits combined. Put Batman & Robin on waivers.

He deserves some of the bashing. How many times does he get a delay of game of illegal motion penalites? All the time. Elite QB’s don’t do that

By just me

October 8, 2010 5:59 PM | Link to this

1. Illegal motion pennalties are not called on the QB. #2. Pass blocking suc. #3. He threw for of 300 yds. How many more would you want? 400??? He has taken part of the blame himself. No QB is gonna come out and say he isn’t getting protection or that his receivers are running bad routes. You dummie are reading everything in the DDN. Go to bengals.com and read some of the statements that the receivers, o-line are saying. When they are going well you people are like, “wow, Benson is running hard, “o-line is great”. They go bad it’s “Boy Palmer SUC”.. They need to go to the no huddle and stay in it. Dosen’t give everyone enough time to think about what to screw up next. How many pass plays has everyone seen where are the end of the play there are two Bengal receivers in the same spot? I have seen it a dozen times this year. GUESS WHAT!! One of those guys was not supposed to be there!!! Don’t put it all on Palmer. These is ample blame to go around.

Just an interview on TV with an X-steeler player. Even he said the Ravens and Bengals were the two most solid teams in the div. 2-2 and to listen to all this squealing on here you would think they were 0-4. Nothing wrong with Carson that some solid protection would not take care of. Go Bengals!
