Injuries force Bengals to juggle roster; Simpson could play

Injuries — and perhaps the ineffective passing game — are forcing the Bengals to play chess with their roster.

Wide receiver Maurice Purify, regarded as invaluable during his time on the practice squad, was waived Wednesday to make room for the re-signing of defensive tackle Shaun Smith.

This could mean that Jerome Simpson, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver in his second year, could finally get a chance to play. Simpson has been active in only 6 games since being drafted in the second round in 2008.

Smith was signed and then released last week when the Bengals needed to promote rookie Rico Murray (Kent State) from the practice squad to help fill the void left by an injury to safety Chris Crocker, who is out this week.

The Bengals will likely look to put Purify back on their practice squad, but the first-year player from Nebraska must pass through waivers first.

With starter Roy Williams out for the year, Crocker nursing an ankle and Kyries Hebert also ailing, Cincinnati could be down to 3 healthy safeties Sunday at San Diego — Chinedum Ndukwe and rookies Tom Nelson and Murray.

Simpson should have already been in the lineup,Bratkowski has got to go.They should have tried to get Weis when ND let him go ,he is an offensive genius.Bratkowski was fired from Seattle, and now the reasons are evident.I have never seen plays telegraphed like they have been this year, and so conservative, you cant win football games in the NFL playing conservative.

Art, wake up!! This team was 4-11-1 last year and they are 9-4 and on the verge of a playoff team. This team has a long way to go to be elite, enjoy it now. You dont shake up something when you are 9-4. This oline can not pass protect that is 100% the reason for a lackluster passing game but they sure as heck are run blocking well. Give Brat credit for adjusting to the strength

Brat is horrible. The reason this team is 9-4 is due to the defense and the defense ALONE. Brat’s play calling is horribly predicatable, and no shots down the field at all. If it’s 2nd and long… run up the middle. EVERY time. Some of the losses can be blamed directly on poor play calling and lack of being aggressive (see Oakland game!) Look what Zimmer did for the D, now we need someone for the O!!! Brat has got to GO!

Brat is wurst, I agree. He’s no Zeke, and he’s always been too predictable. But, he’s Mikey’s boy, just like Paul Alexander, er assistant head coach, hah! If they were smart they’d offer Zimmer a fat juicy contract. But, write it down…he’s gone after this season. Then, back to the same ‘ol Bengals
