No TV? Bengals may be blacked out Sunday

The first-place Bengals may be greeted home by a lot of empty seats Sunday.

Without “a significant increase” in the pace of ticket sales this week, Sunday’s Bengals vs. Houston game at Paul Brown Stadium will not be a sellout, the team’s ticket office announced today.

Under NFL policy, if the 1 p.m. Sunday game is not sold out 72 hours before kickoff — by 1 p.m. this Thursday — the CBS television broadcast will be blacked out in the Bengals’ home market, which includes Cincinnati, Dayton and Lexington, Ky.

The Bengals have sold out their last 46 regular-season and postseason games in time for local television coverage. The last Bengals home game not to sell out was against Houston on Nov. 9, 2003.

You fools who won’t go to games because of Mike Brown aren’t true fans - so stay home. If you can’t get enjoyment out of a team like this, with 4 exciting wins, then stay home, mow the grass and don’t bother the rest of us. This is a good team and it will be in the playoff hunt. Don’t break your ankles jumping on and off the bandwagon - wait, on second though, I hope those ankles snap right off.

Flush Down? What has any members of the Brown Family done that would qualify them as “corrupt”? Do I think the Brown family is a “football family” no not since Paul died. But you will be hard pressed to find a better “business man” than Mike Brown. This is where you people let your feelings for the performance of the team get in your way. As a business It’s Mike Browns job to make that business as profitable as possible. The Bengals have never lost money and as long as people buy tickets and merchandise of their own free will. Its business as usual. Scott if you ever want tickets buy them the day of the game, there are plenty of “brokers” around downtown that are giving good prices right before kickoff.

The price of football tickets is a good example of what has become sick about our society. Thousands of people who can’t in any sane way afford this make multimillionaires of basically worthless people who do nothing but play ball.

By Brian

October 13, 2009 12:10 PM | Link to this

Bill, my season ticket costs me $600 per year and ensures me 10 fun trips to Bengals games with all my friends - which to me is priceless these days. It’s like a mini-vacation without the overnight stay. You just don’t know what you’re missing and the cost is relative to what you decide to spend entertainment dollars on. I, for one, would not spend $10 to see a movie. I’d rather go to one Bengals game for $60 than 10 movies any day.

Just for giggles, I did a quick check on the cheapest retail tickets that I could find…$64 for one deep nosebleed endzone or off corner spot. That’s not counting parking, travel, food, “processing fees”, and a second ticket for a date. Me? I’ll go down to Caddy’s and have a couple of beers and watch the game without freezing.

I am a die hard fan of the bengals but all of us fans need to be honest here. A black out would not be a bad thing. It is widely known that Mike Brown tries to get a winner every 5 years so that he can boost up the 3 year renewals. This year is really important because the 10yr lease suites are up and these are 1005 profit to him. They have to have a winner this year so those big clients renew. The Bengals have 30+ players who were either signed to one year deals or are on there last year of the deal. He is pushing for the winner this year so everyone re-ups their renewals. He is a business man first and a footbal man 10th. The Bengals were solid in 2005 but he did nothing to improve the team. I will enjoy this year for what it is but I am also realistic about my Bengals. You have to hit Mike in the pockets that is the only time he ever changes. Are we 4-1 yes, but I want a consistent winner and not a flash in the pan.

God, Dayton is full of idiots. This is the time to support the Bengals. Dont buy tickets when they lose, that makes sense, but they are winning now, this is the time to support them. And BTW, it is fun to go to games when they are a good team. $150 for 2 tickets? You are looking in the wrong places my friend.

And as long as were talking about convicts, at least we don’t have a murderer on the team. And how about your up-and-coming running back getting hurt by a teammate. Not only the league, but the F.B.I. investigating it. Umm, and you still talk smack.LOL LOL LOL

Don’t worry- the black out will be lifted as they sell the last ticket for a sellout in the last few seconds. Kinda like they win games. Enjoy the winning now. History tells us it won’t last more than one season in a row. This year, perhaps the playoffs. Next year- 4 and 12. No consistency.

Let me start off by saying COLTS #1, now to the bengals. . If you all remember, the Bengals ALWAYS start off good then end up disappointing everybody. i dunno why people get back behind a team that doesnt do what needs to be done. I hear the same thing every season! “this is going to be the Bengals season! followed by, well there is always next year!” its getting rediculous. yes i would love to see them go to the superbowl but its not gonna happen anytime soon.

Colts are # 1? I wasn’t aware that they ranked professional teams. They ALWAYS do? where did you get this fantastic data? They disappoint everybody? What about the little kids? and puppies? Think they’re disappointed? They’re probably more disappointed by your spelling and lack of ability to write anything meaningful.

COLTSFANT513: Did they ‘always’ start off good last year at 0-8? Let me guess, you’ve been a Colts fan since Peyton Manning signed, probably can’t name the offensive line without looking it up and haven’t a clue who your cornerbacks are. Colts, Patriots, bandwagon fans are all the same.

I hope the game is televised. this article is about the bengals and if you don’t like them thats fine but your comments have nothing to do with anything expect to show your jealousy and ignorance. Everybody’s comments about Mike Brown are assumptions and make you look stupid. Brown fans are idiots. Look at them trying to say the field goal wasn’t good when the video was clear. I am a Bengals fan and think the Colts are the #1 team so far. All I know is the Bengals are better than the Steelers, Browns and Ravens which is all that matters until the play offs begin.

I totally agree with ‘Jeff’..! It would be good for Mike Brown to have some ‘black outs’; because ‘Jeff’ is right…so right. Its all about money to him and not about football… Maybe he will change and put more effort into the game (players) and just not the ‘money’ if seats are staying empty.. Paul Brown certainly won’t like empty seats or no more locked in seats for the next 3 years!!! And while I’m here…I am a loyal Bengal fan and have been since 1971… No band wagon here!!!

To all of the Ohio football fans out there; You should be happy that you get to watch at one decent NFL team.Recent history does show a pattern of losing by any means necessary. As to your comments about the owners of all three franchises,Reds,Bengalsand Browns, forgot about winning and their true and loyal fans a long time ago.The really sad fact is that don’t even try to deny it.I am a fan of neither of these football teams, just an NFL fan.Regarding the Reds, drugs and greed have pretty much ruined baseball for me.

Too expensive. We would rather sit at home, in comfort, with clean bathrooms, better food, and a better view and watch it. Try taking a family of four to one of these games; parking, tickets, food, drink, c’mon.

To Pooh: The blackout rule is an NFL rule, not a Bengals rule, so every team deals with this when they do not sell out. To inquiring mind: I beleive there is a CBS affiliate in Bellefontaine that can carry the games, so that would be about the closest place I have heard about. To Clown and Squealer fans: If you want to watch two teams that the Bengals beat play crappy football, then move to Pittsburgh or Cleveland!

By Tony

The team that would be first up to move to L.A. or anywhere would be Jacksonville. They had to close half the stadium to try and get sellouts!

By Mindless Fans

So how’s that stadium deal working out for Hamilton County? NOT TOO GOOD!!! Mike Brown must laugh every time he sees a story about how Hamilton county is virtually broke. What does he care? He still gets paid! Please buy more tickets and help support Mr. Brown. Otherwise, he may only make $40 million this year.

Please don’t buy any Bengals game tickets. We’d much rather watch the Steelers versus Browns game on TV anyway. It means much more to the division title than does the Bengals versus Texans game. As much as I hate to say it, Cleveland has a chance. Pittsburgh quits playing football at halftime. If the Browns get up for them like they did for Cinci, then Pitt should watch out. But, don’t really want to watch that SnoozeFest so thankfully I have Sunday Ticket if the game gets blacked out so I can watch the Vikings beat the Ravens putting Cinci up by 2 in the division (when Clev beats Pitt).

To Tony, I’m in Bellefontaine and the blackouts are in effect here also. Our local CBS is Channel 7 out of Dayton. Hopefully it will sell out, but I understand in today’s economy it’s hard to take a family to a game. Two tickets plus fees, gas, parking and food around 300.00 just can’t do it. Wish I could. As for the Browns or Steeler’s fans, why even come to this thread?

By Tony

October 16, 2009 8:49 AM | Link to this

Rick: Thanks for the update. I had a friend tell me that the last time the game was threatened to be blacked out, but must be somewhere else. I am not sure where it is then, but I know there is an affiliate somewhere just outside of the radius that does carry the games, DDN has ran articles on it before. I will have to do more research.
