2 troupes plan day of tap dance

Dayton lost one tap (and clog-dance company) recently when Rhythm in Shoes made its final exit. It has gained two budding tap troupes in Sole Purpose and the Tap Factor, which are joining forces to present “The Dayton Tap Project” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Stivers School for the Arts, 1313 E. Fifth St.

Besides guest artists including Alexandra Bradley, who has performed at the Cannes Film Festival and the 2002 Winter Olympics, the performance will incorporate students from Ruskin Elementary School and the Twin Towers neighborhood in Dayton, where Sole Purpose founder Kandee Thacker-Mann has been teaching.

Thacker-Mann has performed in Savion Glover’s “Footnotes” and was a winner at “Showtime at the Apollo.”

Tap Factor founder Chris Erk, who performed a guest spot with Rhythm in Shoes at its final performance, was a member of Tap Dogs for 10 years. He now lives in Dayton and teaches at Wright State University and Sinclair Community College.

“The Dayton Tap Project” will include tap dance classes for the public at 9, 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. at Stivers. Tickets are $10 for the performance. Fee is $25 for one class, $40 for two and $50 for three, with discounts for Dayton Public School students.

Compared to Rhythm in Shoes, Thacker-Mann said the new Dayton tap style “is less folk, more funky.”

I am very excited to see this performance and hope that everyone will come out to support this event. See you on Saturday November 20th at 7:30 pm when doors open at Stivers. In addition to wonderful dancers from New York Michigan and of course Dayton performing, the streetpeace youth from East End will perform. Kandee Thacker Mann has been providing instruction to the youth at Ruskin PreK-8 School for some time. Please come and join us for this grant event!
