Vic details black arts fest
The Victoria Theatre Association has completed the lineup for the 2010-11 Key Bank African-American Arts Festival.
The fourth annual showcase of art and performance will span the Dayton Opera’s 50th season opener, “Porgy and Bess,” to the Broadway Series blockbuster “The Lion King.”
Here’s a complete list:
Oct. 23, 29 and 31: “Porgy and Bess,” a production including the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and choirs from Central State and Wilberforce universities.
Nov. 10: “Drumline Live,” a show inspired by the historically black college marching band tradition. The music ranges from Duke Ellington to Kanye West and Andre 3000.
Jan. 16, 2011: “3 Mo’ Divas,” a female followup to the concert “3 Mo’ Tenors.”
Feb. 1-28: “Visual Voices: Dayton Skyscrapers,” an exhibit featuring portraits of black community role models. Willis “Bing” Davis serves as curator.
March 14, 2011: Basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar will speak at 7:30 p.m. as part of the University of Dayton Diversity Series. Earlier, at 4 p.m., there will be a preview screening of his new full-length documentary, “On the Shoulders of Giants: The Story of the Best Basketball Team You Never Heard Of.”
March 1, 2011: “Cheaper to Keep Her.” Brian McKnight and Vivica A. Fox star in this stage play with music, drama and comedy about a married couple ready to call it quits.
April 4, 2011: “Freedom Train,” a production about the Underground Railroad for area students presented in the Physician for Kids Discovery Series at the Victoria.
June 14-July 10, 2011: “Disney’s The Lion King,” the smash Broadway musical set in Africa.
