Victoria posts $400,000 surplus

The Victoria Theatre Association and Arts Center Foundation reported Wednesday, Aug. 11, that it ended the 2009-10 season with a $400,000 surplus.

The organization’s headline Broadway Series was buoyed by $4.5 million in ticket sales for the local premiere of the musical “Wicked.”

Unaudited figures showed operating revenues of $16 million, treasurer Steven Beinlich reported at the VTA/ACF’s annual meeting in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Performing Arts Series.

Programming accounted for 62.6 percent of income, contributions for 10.4 percent. Other revenue components were: facility and office rentals in the Schuster, Victoria and Loft theaters, 9.7 percent; Citilites restaurant and catering, 8.1 percent; parking garage, 7.9 percent, and ticket center services, 3.7 percent.

Costs to acquire and present programming accounted for 57.3 percent of the $15.6 million in operating expenses. Costs to operate the buildings totaled 15.9 percent.

The organization’s economic impact on the Dayton metropolitan area was estimated at $27.8 million for the year ending June 30, 2010.

Ken Neufeld, who completed his first full year as president and CEO, described the year as “a modest success. A $400,000 surplus for operations of $16 million is actually a small percentage,” he said.

It followed a $300,000 cushion in 2008-9, during which the VTA announced layoffs and other cost-cutting measures.

The latest surplus “allows us to freeze rental rates, which is good for the resident companies and tenants that use our facilities,” Neufeld said.

He predicted “a tougher year” in 2010-11, due in part to reductions in government funding.

Recent fundraising results have been solid. “We raised about 98 percent of goal in our annual campaign,” Neufeld said.
