Mahaffey Claims First Win at Kil-Kare

Xenia, OH - It was a cool night Friday at Kil-Kare Speedway but a good crowd was on hand to witness the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events on the 3/8ths mile asphalt oval. At the close of action it was Don Mahaffey claiming his first late model feature of the young season, Ryan Fleming his first modified, Shawn Stansell his first sport stock and Bo Hoelscher his second compact feature.
The thirty lap feature was first on the program which saw former modified driver Shawn Stroble on the pole with second generation driver Bob Sibila alongside. When Don Beddies waved the green Sibila took command with Stroble second and Don Mahaffey third. A ltttle contact on turn two dropped Stroble to fourth as second fast timer Matt Parsons took over third with fast timer Dick Dunlevy running fifth.
Sibila continued to set the pace with Mahaffey dogging him when Stroble spun on lap eleven with Shawn Stansell and Brandon Oakley spinning to avoid Stroble who was able to contine as was Stansell but Oakley was out. The green flag was just unfolded when Ray Muncy and Andy Peterson tangled on turn three bringing out the second caution.
Sibila set sail on the restart and again Mahaffey set sail for him with Parsons andStansell right behind making it a four car run for the front. Mahaffey tried the inside even bumping Sibila but all of a sudden Mahaffey shot to the outside to steal the lead from Sibila. Just like last year Mahaffey began to run away from the field . With one lap to go it was Mahaffey, Sibila, Parsons, Stansell, and Dunlevy the top five and when the checker waved it was the Oakley Blacktop special of Mahaffey claiming his first feature of the year trailed by Sibila, Parsons, Stansell, and Dunlevy.
Sixteen fine modifieds took to the track for their thirty lap feature which saw rookie Zach Stacy and Flyin’ Ryan Fleming in the front row. Fleming took the lead as first nights feature winner Derek Weatherhead charged to the inside to make it three wide into turn one with Weatherhead coming out second behind Fleming but the yellow came out as Zach Stacy hit the wall and was put out.
Fleming stayed out front after the restart with Tyler Mahaffey running third with Bill Burba fourth and Mike Carroll fifth. Fleming worked his way through slower traffic as Weatherhead tried to catch him. Carroll worked his way up to fourth and then started chasing down Mahaffey who was riding third. Meanwhile Fleming put some distance over Weatherhead with Carroll still in a battle with Mahaffey but Mahaffey spun on his own with two laps to go.
When the checker waved it was sixteen year old Fleming taking the win in his Dayton Water Company special with Weatherhead second followed by Mike Carroll, Jim Lewis Jr., and Rob Yelton.
Phil Gussler Jr. and Shawn Stansell led the sport stocks to the green in their twenty five lap feature as they ran side by side into turn two with Stansell claiming the lead with Gussler riding second with Gordon Watson, fast timer Travis Digges and Mike South Jr right behind. Stansell held his distanced over the challengers they was nt far behind when they came up on traffic Watson charged up to second but the caution came out when Stansell spun on the backstretch. Watson was sent to the tail and Stansell back in front.
The second caution appeared when Watson spun on turn four again letting the field to bunch up behind Stansell. Agnain the caution appeared on lap fourteen when Tyler Mahaffey spun on the frontstretch. Watson was now on the move as he claime fourth and then went after Travis Digges. He took third with six laps to go as the laps wound down.
Another caution happened on lap nineteen when Josh Longstreth spun and when the green came back out Stansell continued to set the pace and again the pace was alowed when Mahaffey spun with four laps to go. Finally when the checker waved it was Stansell and his Replacement Auto Parts special taking the win followed by Phil Gussler Jr., Gordon Watson, Travis Digges, and Mike South Jr.
Twenty compacts headed to the green flag for their twenty lap feature with last years champion Joe Hoelscher and Gary Williams leading the eighteen other starters to the green. A four car tangle right after the drop of the green called for a complete restart. Hoelscher took command with Matt Stone right behind and Bo Hoelscher running third with Williams fourth and fast timer Kevin Flynn fifth.
The second caution came out on lap three for a spin but when back underway Stone was haunting Joe Hoelscher for the lead as they weeded through traffic. The top four were almost bumper to bumper at the halfway mark. It became a father son battle as son Bo challenged his dad for the lead and doing so with three laps to go and then the fireworks erupted as Darren Jackson brushed the turn three wall and Joe Hoelscher smacked the backstretch wall slowing the pace.
For the restart it was opening night feature winner Bo Hoelscher in front followed by Matt Stone, Kevin Flynn, James McElfresh, and Gary Williams the top five with three laps to go. Bo Hoelscher made it two wins in a row as he claimed the checker first trailed by Matt Stone, Kevin Flynn, James McElfresh, and Gary Williams.
Craig Edwards captured the Trailer Race of Destruction to collect the $300 top prize.
