Hemelgarn misses Indy 500 field

Dayton’s Ron Hemelgarn failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 during the final day of qualifying on Sunday, May 17. Hemelgarn, a Chaminade graduate, again teamed with driver Buddy Lazier to get the No. 91 into the 33-car field.

The duo, who won the Indy 500 in 1996, failed to make the field during Saturday’s qualifying and waved off their only run on Sunday after their first lap was too slow.

“I’m just very disappointed, of course,” Lazier said. “We just didn’t maximize the opportunity. We just didn’t have it here today. We had it earlier, but we had a little miscommunication. I feel so bad for my guys because they worked so hard. I’ll be back, we’ll be back, but it just wasn’t there today.”

Dayton has had their fair share of “500” drivers and owners, Pete Wales and “Spider” Webb are 2 that pop to mind. Dayton used to be a hotbed for racing of all kinds at the Dayton Speedway, Kilkare & Forest Park.
