Sessions help seniors file for stimulus checks

Free assistance will be available to seniors, veterans and people with disabilities who still need to file their 2007 tax return in order to get a federal economic stimulus check.

The United Way of Greater Cincinnati is offering sessions to help those not normally required to file, said Katy Crossen, spokeswoman for the United Way. The agency has partnered with the Earned Income Tax Coalition, which is providing trained volunteers to help prepare attendees' taxes.

People should take advantage of the free assistance, said Suzanne Burke, chief executive officer for the Council on Aging.

"Many seniors, especially those who only receive Social Security income, don't normally file tax returns but must file in order to receive the rebate," she said. "We encourage older adults to find out if they are eligible for this rebate and get assistance if needed in filing returns."

According to the IRS, those who had an income of $3,000 or more may qualify for the stimulus payments, which began distribution in May. Individuals may qualify for $300 and couples may qualify for $600.

Qualifying income includes Social Security benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance, veterans' disability benefits or Railroad Retirement.

Officials from the IRS said the stimulus check will not affect Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits.

Although people who do not normally file have until Oct. 15 to do so, they are encouraged to finish their tax return before then to ensure they receive their money as soon as possible, said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.

"The quickest way to receive your refund and your economic stimulus payment is to file early, file electronically and use direct deposit," Shulman said.
